A fluid career is one that is a journey, not just a job.
As we all know, fundamental shifts have occurred in the workplace in recent years so that the “organizational career” has been replaced by the “individually-driven career”. Now, more than ever, professionals need to be able to navigate, career-plan, and be crystal clear about what makes them productive and fulfilled.
Women have always known this. According to a report by the Harvard Business Review and the Center for Work-Life Policy, a majority of professional women describe their careers as non-linear. Often driven by the stages our families are in, our careers take many twists and turns.
We’ve been in the fast lane.
We’ve slowed down and taken the scenic route, maybe with a flexible work arrangement.
We have off-ramped to be with our kids.
We look for on-ramps to return on.
Some of us are exploring entrepreneurship, seeking freedom and flexibility.
A fluid career allows for this motion, as it is part of the process of life-long career development. Sometimes it can be difficult to maintain ambition and vision. The key is to be very clear what stage you are in and what your priorities are at that stage. And then you can structure your decisions (big and small) to reflect those priorities. As a coach, my passion is to help ambitious women take the long-view of their careers, and design the journey for maximum satisfaction and work/life fit.
Work and life can flow together, rather than compete with each other.
